What Corporations Can Learn from School Administrators

4 Steps for Leading and Managing Begins Here!

Think back to your school days. Was there a teacher who had a lasting impact on you? The answer is undoubtedly, yes, but what you may not realize is that, behind the scenes, the principal and other school administrators motivated the teachers to be engaged and focused. Recognizing this, the McConnell Leadership Group spent time with one unnamed school district observing their methods of motivation and engagement which, we firmly believe, can be applied to the corporate and not-for-profit world. We synthesized our findings, made recommendations, and developed a four-step process that has been implemented by the school district. This uncase study summarizes four (4) principles and practices:

  • Identify Style & Strengths
  • Define Roles & Goals
  • Plan & Implement
  • Coach & Give Feedback

Whether student, employee, school administrator, or manager, the keys to engaged, productive and successful organizations remain the same: develop leadership skills in others, set goals, be vigilant about attaining the goals, and create an atmosphere that’s motivating and conducive to growth.

The Superintendent of the school district put it this way:

“The McConnell Leadership Group’s expertise and vast knowledge base provided my team with information they would never have been exposed to had they not had the chance to work with such experienced and well-read individuals. The leaders of the McConnell Leadership Group are very creative thinkers who facilitate high-interest, engaging workshops that leave participants thinking "outside the box" about leadership ability, tactics, and potential. I recommend the McConnell Leadership Group as someone who will raise the bar for your administrators or managers and who will work closely with you to realize your leadership goals.”

From school districts to large, multi-divisional organizations, our holistic, systemic, four-step process allows leadership, management and organizations to flourish - and it is the foundation of all work that the McConnell Leadership Group conducts. Allow us the opportunity to put it to work for you.

  • Identify leadership/managerial styles
  • Assess your own strengths as well as the strengths of others
  • Focus on what you are good at; what you enjoy
  • To ensure engagement, tap into the styles and strengths of others; include your strengths, too
  • Clearly define the roles within an organization; elucidate the difference between managing and leading
  • Establish high priority goals; define specific outcomes that need to be achieved
  • Ensure that goals are aligned with senior leadership and filter those goals throughout the organization
  • Identify reactive, “firefighting” activities that waste time
  • Remain focused on goals established in Define Roles & Goals and determine what is important
  • Establish and communicate a vision of success to everyone in the organization
  • Assess the organization’s culture and readiness to achieve goals
  • Work backwards from the finish line to ensure that resources are allocated and deadlines are met
  • Break projects and initiatives into manageable pieces - ensuring progress and fulfillment over time
  • Tap into personal networks of people and resources; make use of their strengths and expertise
  • Model behavior that encourages feedback - and coaching that disseminates throughout the organization
  • Provide candid feedback: focus on strengths as well as areas of improvement - ensure  that members of the organization achieve established goals
  • Use the "3 E" approach to coaching - Engage, Energize, Empower
  • Be exacting and honest when critiquing the performance of employees; help them understand areas to build on, eliminate and continue
